I think you need to upgrade your version of doxygen. I think they switched
from *.gif to *.png around version 1.2.15. The config file we are using
for now was generated with doxygen-1.2.16.
I don't intend to support gifs (and hope nobody else does) since those
are big no-no on savannah due to patent issues.
