I get the "Access Denied" error on my machine as well, if
I have the newer stk500 hooked up, and use '-c stk500'.
Change to "-c stk500v2", should fix your problem.

Perhaps there should be a message that says 'try -c stk500v2',
or one that looks less like a security issue?

This is with 5.3.1.
