for my chain I used binutils 2.17 and gcc 4.1.2 from a GNU mirror and avr-libc 
(cvs as of 2007-02-21) from savannah.nongnu.org with a few misc patches and 
built on a slackware system

but a quick check shows the target doesn't exist in binutils 2.16.1, so I 
doubt it exists before that
