I wrote a lengthy reply from work this morning, but it 
has never shown up on the list.

Saying:

a_volatile = b_volatile = c;

produced exactly the same object code as:

b_volatile = c;  a_volatile = b_volatile;

Problem remained the same, compiled with 3.4.5
the code works, with 4.1.1 it did not.
