Is there anyway we can try and isolate where the problem is at? bintuils 
or gcc?
Have you tried using bintuils 2.15 with avr-gcc 3.4.4?
Or binutils 2.16 with avr-gcc 3.4.3?

IIRC, there are about 3 having to do with DWARF2 in AVR GCC, but nothing 
about your error message rings a bell.
