Sure. The author of AVRDUDE, Brian Dean even sells his Mavric
board that works with an ATmega128.

I quickly plugged it together on an STK500/501, works as expected.
When I reduce the STK's clock sufficiently (like down to 10 kHz),
I can see the port B LEDs flicker.
