When a native english speaker hears the word freak, it does not have a positive conotation. Native english speakers hence might get the wrong impression of the quality of the content of the avr freaks site.And, unfortunately, a number of them do get the wrong impression....
For me, freak is nothing more than dedicated enthusiast and has nothing negative about it.
