Must be some really old assembler, or a bug somewhere...
Current CVS binutils have no problem with "spm".
Anyway, you can always write:

        .word 0x95E8
        .word 0xFFFF
        nop

(some of the datasheets want 0xFFFF and "nop" after "spm").
