Thanks for the suggestion, Glenn.
However, I've hit a new snag: subdirs.
I posted details and a smaller stand-alone demonstrator on the
emacs-devel thread: TL;DR this automake test fails regardless:

   make check TESTS='t/lisp-subdir.sh'
