If you do so, say remove both `.rexp' and `.texp' from TEST_EXTENSIONS, you
should also remove the definitions of REXP_LOG_COMPILER and TEXP_LOG_COMPILER,
and insted define `LOG_COMPILER' to `$(srcdir)/runtest'.
In fact, the documentation from the automake manual reads something like:
 ``For tests that match an extension .ext listed in TEST_EXTENSIONS, you
   can provide a test driver using the variable ext_LOG_COMPILER (note the
   upper-case extension). For all tests without a registered extension,
   the variable LOG_COMPILER may be used.''
