I am not using these in my own makefiles, but perhaps someone else
might be. If there is reason to believe that these variables might
currently be used, then there is reason for caution since
3) Whether to document the s/$/-am/ rule for the per-directory target
so it then also holds for user-provided recursive rules.
(If yes, then we could share the rule code text between both.)
