Makefile not updated on Makefile.am change?

Hi,

recently, when I change the Makefile.am, the makefile am doesn't 
get regenerated on `make`.

Is this usual, or what could be wrong?

I now have to reinvoke `autoreconf -v --install` to recreate them (somehow).
