Hmm: that documentation is fairly unhelpful. It was last updated
13-Feb-98: I'm guessing that was before DIST_SUBDIRS was invented.
It should tell you to use SUBDIRS, and conditional variables, and
DIST_SUBDIRS if SUBDIRS contains any configure substitutions. I'm
afraid I havn't got time to write a documentation patch right now
though...
