JFTR: I've used the automake resulting from the application of these
patches to bootstrap, check and distcheck the master branches of a few
GNU packages (gawk, sed, grep, gzip, m4, libtool, autoconf, diffutils,
findutils, coreutils, parted), and found no regression. This has made
me more confident about the goodness of this series. Still, if any
reader of the list has the possibility of trying out the series on a
package of his own, or a non-mainstream package he's interested in,
this would be the best time to do so. To simplify such a work, I've
pushed the patch series to a temporary public branch `dist-refactor'
(branched off of `test-protocols'). Note that, while I hope to be
able to merge this branch to master with at most few follow-up fixes
and improvements, at this point I cannot yet guarantee that the branch
won't have to be rewinded or scrapped, so "caveat user".

Regards,
  Stefano
