Was my lucky hit for ".nfs delete rename" and agrees with your
understanding, please forgive my fuzzy memory.  So presumably
something is holding the files open.  In the case of my "make
distcheck" issue, it's the post-distclean check that fails:

ERROR: files left in build directory after distclean:

is followed by 100 or so .nfs%4.4x files, mostly in the top directory.
 libntp, ntpd, and ntpq SUBDIRS each had two this run.  The sntp
subproject (with its own configure.ac) had 7 .nfs hangers-on.  I have
a complete log on request.
