If you're interested, there is
info Autoconf "Coding Style"
to look at.
One more thing I forgot to mention: your macro executes a host binary,
which won't work when cross-compiling. Luckily (or on purpose?) it will
choose the pessimistic default in that case. It may be useful to
document this.
