I assume the goal is general @variable@ substitution, like what
happens if you use the following to get @common_mk@ replaced:
--- autoconfig.ac ---
common_mk=common.mk
AC_SUBST_FILE(common_mk)
AC_CONFIG_FILES([common.mk:common.in])
