Oh well. Bob unfortunately just used one of the few packages which do
not make use of a C compiler as an example. So that special configure
did not tell you about CPPFLAGS and LDFLAGS.
Well, just try this (assuming you have a working Autoconf package
installed):
$ cat > configure.ac << EOF
AC_INIT(bla, 0.1, address@hidden)
AC_PROG_CC
AC_OUTPUT
EOF
$ autoconf
$ ./configure --help
And it will tell you.
