Some time ago I ran across the very same problem on a NFS exported directory here at LRDE. It turned out we were using the userspace NFS server. Switching to Linux' kernel NFS server did the trick.
I want say "NFS Read-only partition".Actually I use NFS (read-write) to share my source between several OS without problem, and with this beautiful tools make/automake/autoconf/... I can have one source dir, several obj dir without effort. It's run fine on Solaris, linux[i386|sparc], [Net|Free|Open]BSD ... Last I didn't test is Cygwin. Don't know if nfs share is supported in Cygwin (Ok I use samba in this case).
