It doesn't ignore 'awk'; it just prefers 'gawk' if there is one.
On Solaris 8, 'awk' is old awk, and is far inferior to either
/opt/sfw/bin/gawk or /usr/bin/nawk.
This reminds me of the current thread in autoconf-patches about which
shell to use; the issues are similar.
