maybe ?  automake & libtool haven't been doing this, so i'm not sure how
useful such a test would be in practice.  and what would autoconf do if
it didn't think `ar` is compatible ?  issue an error & abort ?

similarly, what are you expecting autoconf to do with this information ?
should we ignore that `ar` ?  or it wrap it ?  or do something else ?
