Updated to a more recent sed on MSYS and that fixed it:

~$ uname -a
MINGW32_NT-5.1 PEDA-PC 1.0.15(0.47/3/2) 2010-08-010 22:33 i686 Msys
~$ sed --version
GNU sed version 4.2.1
Copyright (C) 2009 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
This is free software; see the source for copying conditions.  There is NO
warranty; not even for MERCHANTABILITY or FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE,
to the extent permitted by law.
