I've pushed this portion of your patch; but am still thinking about the
best approach for AC_PROG_CC_C89, AC_PROG_CC_C99, and
AC_USE_SYSTEM_EXTENSIONS.
Meanwhile, Karl, I noticed that you autoupdated our last edit of
install.texi over to gnulib[1], but did not regenerate the other variants
in that directory. Can you tweak your autoupdate script to also run
make -C doc INSTALL INSTALL.ISO INSTALL.UTF-8
any time install.texi is changed?
