FWIW, when writing a patch, I usually do
  make check TESTSUITEFLAGS=-l | less

and pick out likely candidates for failures, and run only those:
  make check TESTSUITEFLAGS='-k AS_HELP_STRING -k autotest'

That does not take so long.  I run the whole suite at most when I'm done
with a patch.
