Nope, it wasn't.  I remembered wrongly.  Thank you for the correction.

So it will actually be a new feature of Autoconf 2.62 that the user
can substitute arbitrarily large values, as long as each line of the
substituted value is a bit shorter than the line length limit of the
shell and the pattern space and input line limits of sed.  (To be
precise: the respective limit minus one (for `!') and the number of
characters in the variable name.)  Nice.
