I agree that we should hold this back.
A better approach, I think, is to define a new macro
AS_SET_BASENAME(var, val) that sets VAR to the basename of VAL. This
macro can use shell substitution if available, e.g. "var=${var##*/}".
This should be much faster since it avoids a fork.
