"etc." doesn't need special handling when it at the end of a sentence,
which is always the case in the texinfo manuals.
However, "etc." does need special texinfo handling in some cases,
i.e., when it is not at the end of a sentence and is not followed by
another symbol like ",". The Autoconf manual already treats "etc."
specially in these cases, and we should keep it that way.
As far as I could tell this issue doesn't affect the proposed patch,
since it treated 'etc.' correctly.
