I'm fine with Autoconf using Channels!  So feel free to change
General to using Channels if you like it better.  You can also
split it into several bits if you wish.  I'll make a wrapper then
for Autoconf executables (I don't want to play with tons of
use in all these scripts, because they are many, but I agree from
a library point of view, General is ill-designed).

(Err, and of course I'm justing expressing my opinion, and by
no means asking you to do it :)
