Here is the part of the libit manual that I found most interesting:

In your package, any file which has the same name as a libit file will be
automatically removed and replaced by a symbolic link to the libit file,
given your file is empty, has an identical contents as the libit file, or is
already a symbolic link (regardless of where or what it points to).

Implementing this facility is very easy.  However it clashes with the choice
to use --symlink instead of --copy in autoreconf (which I followed in
autolib for coherency).  I think we should deprecate --symlink, make it the
default, and add a --copy option if we are going to follow the libit idea.
