This fix is wrong, what was proposed was better.  Portability is no
religion wrt GCS.  It's becoming more complicated that it needs to.

If the only obstacle to releasing Autoconf is your fear wrt this, then
please remove it.  Remove it in the sense that you leave the code in
there, for M4sh, but just don't invoke it from Autoconf.

Personally, I don't fear that problem as much as you do.
