The Emacs 21 mode takes its origin in something I tried to write for
myself, hence XEmacs, and that I sent to both groups.  Martin made it
better for XEmacs.  If the Emacs people didn't provide feedback, they
are guilty.

My opinion is that we are in the best place to decide what the
Autoconf mode is, so _we_ should ship it.  Autoconf has nothing to do
with C, Fortran or even Python and Perl in that its syntax, macros
etc. often change, there is no standard.

It is up to us, and our users, to keep these files alive, up to date,
compatible to both worlds.
