Thanks, Ralf. This was to put d'esprit (French "of spirit") into a short 
document. I didn't want to invoke French language support for just one 
character and I thought something like \' should work but it put accent 
aigu on the first vowel of esprit instead. I had to leave a space after 
\textquotesingle but the pdf looked fine. I didn't find symbols-a4.pdf 
anywhere in miktex subdirectory. I will download it from ctan.
