Dear Ralf,
many thanks for your assistance. I have recently downloaded the emacs-22.0.50.1-20050626-w32.zip archive from nqmacs.sf.net. (Our firewall prevented me from accessing the Crasseux site). I will try to re-install emacs, maybe something went wrong there. I will keep you informed on the progress.

Could be a broken Emacs installation. Do you have a way to
cross-check with one of the pre-compiled versions available from
www.crasseux.com or nqmacs.sf.net?
