Doh! I think the 2.8 behavior is nicer, but a smoother transition sure would have been nice.

Yup. Worked like a champ. Cool! Unfortunately, I'm getting an error trying to compile the latest ArX head: build/arx/utility_functions/gpg_verify.cpp:49: error: `cerr' undeclaredI added #include <iostream> at the top to get around it. Same problem here, and I applied the same fix:
build/arx/utility_functions/list_archive_keys.cpp:44: error: `cerr' undeclared
