The Theosophists build a pantheon; but it is only a pantheonfor pantheists. But the Zealots and the Legionaries did not turn the othercheek any more than we do, if so much.
It is far from certain, indeed, that they did not know it already.
It would be nearer the truth to say that the denial of them isquite peculiar to our time. It was important while it wasstill insignificant, and certainly while it was still impotent. If it was a truth at all, it was because it was a prophecy. Confucius would have come from his temples of ancestor-worshipto worship a child.
I only say that if the rationalists refuse to satisfy it,the pagans will not be satisfied. The Church contains what the world does not contain.
It dared to lookright through it as though the gold and marble had been glass.
But the Zealots and the Legionaries did not turn the othercheek any more than we do, if so much. I only say that if the rationalists refuse to satisfy it,the pagans will not be satisfied.
In short, we can say that these ideals are impossible in themselves. Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.
The discovery is, in this case, truly a scientific discovery. But the wise Men must be seeking wisdom, and for them theremust be a light also in the intellect.
But after all these learned men would have come to learn.
I do not herereason about the refusal of rationalism to satisfy this need. We should have a worse shock if wereally imagined the nature of Christ named for the first time.
But theyare very far from being the only sort of words that he utters. As I say, while the artmay be insufficient, I am not sure that the instinct is unsound.
