I have got a SATA drive and adcd doesn't work on it because it lacks an 
audio connector. I don't know if other SATA drives provide an audio 
connector.

Adcd uses the kernel commands to play a track, seek, etc. It also 
displays the error messages served by the kernel. It seems recent 
hardware is losing the ability of directly playing audio CDs. If this is 
the case, there is nothing adcd can do.
