Out of interest, I took your,

  what_i_expected.jpg

created a pdf,

   what_i_expected.pdf

then used pdfswf ( from 0.9.0 ) to get,

   what_i_expected.swf.

No wide margins.

What did you create your original PDF with/from?

May be 0.8.0 has an issue?

Why not try this again with the latest stable version?
