Hi everyone,
It looks as if samba is the problem. Having browsed through some mailing
list archives, I do seem to have
a version of smbfs that doesn't support large files.
I am not able to find any patches for 2.4.18, but I found some for
2.4.20 so I'll patch manually - hopefully
that will sort it out. Will let you know how it goes.

Samba could also be the problem.
It can be compiled with and without large file support.
Can you create a large file on the NTFS system via samba?
One simple way to try is
dd if=/dev/zero of=ntfs_target bs=1m count=10000
That should create a 10 Gig file.
