URL: <http://savannah.nongnu.org/support/?106584> Summary: junctions need to be properly processed for useful backups Project: rdiff-backup Submitted by: covici Submitted on: Mon 22 Dec 2008 06:27:56 AM GMT Category: None Priority: 5 - Normal Severity: 3 - Normal Status: None Privacy: Public Assigned to: None Originator Email: Open/Closed: Open Discussion Lock: Any Operating System: Microsoft Windows _______________________________________________________ Details: In trying to do a full backup of a Windows Vista volume to a remote Linux volume, I discovered that Vista uses an NTFS facility which they call reparse points -- which are really links. These are used quite a lot -- unbeknownst to the unwary user -- for instance the "documents and settings" item in the \ folder of the hard drive is actually junction to the users directory -- and there are many other places. This could duplicate data upon a restore and cause major problems otherwise. _______________________________________________________ Reply to this item at: <http://savannah.nongnu.org/support/?106584> _______________________________________________ Message sent via/by Savannah http://savannah.nongnu.org/
