I can for case 1.  Several bug reports have already been filed, see
  http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=120554
and the duplicates mentioned in the bug report.

I'd rather have Pan doing nothing (i.e. trying to keep the connection
to all servers) than going offline.


I had the same problem with Pan 0.14.2 always being stuck on a download when I came back to it. My solution was to go back to Pan 0.11.4 which seems to work like a charm once you work out how to stop it from crashing. Been using it for the past year now. I can give you hints on how to keep it stable if you want.
