Follow-up Comment #5, patch #9712 (project octave):

Does bitpack/bitunpack take care of endianness? The documentation says the
bits come in increasing order of significance so I expect if x(1) is always
the least significant bit, bitpack should place it at the correct position in
the output. Am I right?
