Sorry, the error was coming from this bug in the statistics pkg:

Bottom line, the parallel-4.0.1 pkg builds and runs using the attached patched
file providing you implement the edits from:
Markus Mützel ( https://savannah.gnu.org/users/mmuetzel) for two files in
the octave include directory
https://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/bc681594872a
All those bugs are known and fix exist and are published.
Thank you all for your inputs.
My parallel pkg runs as expected on:
- macOS Ventura using octave-8.2.0
- macOS Monterey using octave-7.3.0
In both case, I used the same patched pkg file:
