Follow-up Comment #4:

it appears that the ad package has been unmaintained for over a decade and no
real changes have been made since the initial release.  a patch pushed in bug
#41089 in 2014 'for the next release' has yet to be released. 

closing this bug as won't fix.  and it seems the old svn repository is no
longer accessible at sf.  if someone wants to resurrect the ad package, v1.06
can still be downloaded from the Octave Forge page.
