Follow-up Comment #1, bug #55623 (project octave):
My two cents: If you do this, it shouldn't completely mimic the behavior of
Matlab's pathtool. Matlab's pathtool persistently modifies the global Matlab
path in the Matlab installation itself, which is problematic for shared or
managed Matlab installations. It should probably be a per-user setting
instead.
