Follow-up Comment #24:

I have a true fix in the C++ code that makes Octave compatible with Matlab
when using a "parent" property in the constructor of a graphics object. 
Unfortunately, we also are doing the code freeze for version 5.0 today which
means I can't get this feature in.

In the mean time, your hack to detect Octave and apply a two-step creation and
re-parenting will work.

I'll also take a look at whether there is a cheap hack in the hgtransform
m-file that we could use for the next 6 months.  That kind of change I
probably could get in.
