Category: Fasttrack-Plugin
Severity: 5 - Average
Item Group: Program malfunction
Resolution: None
Assigned to: b8_bavard
Status: Open
Release: 2-5-12
Release: 2.5.12
Platform Version: Linux
Binaries Origin: Binary from Savannah
CPU type: None

Summary: Fasttrack broken

Original Submission: I've tried using Fasttrack for the first time in a couple
weeks on both MLDonkey 2.5.4 and the latest 2.5.12 and neither of the release
can connect to Fasttrack. The app attempts to connect to one node
fm2.imesh.com, fails, then just sits there. I tried adding server names of
supernodes I know to be up and running: MLDonkey still cannot connect.
Although I can telnet into the working supernodes, MLDonkey connections fail to
these nodes, as well as the main node fm2.imesh.com. I hope this problem is
fixed shortly, because as the Fasttrack network contains the most files, it is
the most important of the support protocols. Also, searching on the SoulSeek
network does not seem to work. I can connect to SoulSeek, but that's it.
Searches (for the most basic of words) stream alot of data across my 'net
monitor' but never show any matching search results. One last thing: The OLD
gui was much, much better, it was simpler, easier to use (I
don't like all of the unlabled icons and the splash screen.) It was better
when the search results were on a seperate tab from the search forms, because
nobody wants to have to scroll through a long list of search results in a tiny
screen (combining the search form and the search results on the same tab: The
form wastes too much screen space.) Please go back to the old GUI: It was
better, cleaner, faster, and easier to use.

Just a follow up to my post before about Fasttrack not working in MLDonkey: I
tried the Fasttrack support in giFT / giFToxic and it is working flawlessly
with no login or connection problems. You may want to consider having a look
at their code, as it may be useful in troubleshooting the Fasttrack problems in
MLDonkey. I see in the lastest release 2.5.14 that nothing is mentioned about
Fasttrack being fixed, so I won't bother downloading it, as I am assuming the
Fasttrack implementation is still broken. Just thought you might benefit from
knowing about a working implementation of Fasttrack. :) Since the MLDonkey
Fasttrack support broke, I've been using giFT with giFToxic and giFTcurs with
no problems (It always gets me connected within a minute.) You should consider
having a look at these versions of their code (which I am currently using):

giFT 0.6.11
giFTcurs 0.6.2
giFToxic 0.0.10

(giFT-Fasttrack website: http://developer.berlios.de/projects/gift-fasttrack)
(giFT website: http://gift.sourceforge.net/)

These are versions I know to be currently connecting and working. Their code
is in C/C++, but I'm sure there's some way it can be applied to OCaml. Hope
this helps you guys.

Okay, I tried that list of supernodes. The list contained about 220 supernodes
and NONE of them work. Either this list is really old, or something is wrong
with MLDonkey. Also, 'supernodes' usually are on port 1214, when they on other
ports, 99% of the time they are dialup or dynamic IP users connecting for a
brief period of time. Honestly, I think something is wrong with your Fasttrack
protocol support. I can telnet into some Fasttrack servers on the IP/port, but
MLDonkey cannot seem to connect to any of them (so the server may be up and
running, but MLDonkey is just failing to connect.) Any plans to get the
connection to main fm2.imesh.com server working again? It's better to use the
main IMesh node than to have to come to the forum and download (dead) lists of
supernodes. Again, I can telnet into fm2.imesh.com on port 1214, but MLDonkey
is simply not connecting to it (the server is up, but MLDonkey's Fasttrack
support is broken???) From an Ethereal
packet scan, it seems MLDonkey just connects, sends a few TCP ACK packets and
then disconnects without even attempting to login or anything at all. When I
telnet into fm2.imesh.com, I can type one or two lines (of junk) before the
server disconnects me (so I know the server itself is running, but it seems
MLDonkey is just connecting then disconnecting, nothing else.)

Regarding the old GTK GUI: use ./configure --disable-newgui
Regarding Fasttrack you can find a list of working ultrapeers here:
