First: I assume anyone using LilyPond already  has at least basic understanding of musical notes - and in most cases more than basic understanding? Otherwise writing LilyPond scores would be extremely difficult.

Second: It's not uncommon to already start learning to play the piano (or any other instrument) while you are getting acquainted with musical notes. Or even better, before that. I only started reading and writing dutch, my native language, some years áfter I started to learn to talk. It shouldn't be much different with learning to play, read, and write music. For example the Suzuki Method is based on this principle.
