Modern gcc will be fine on cygwin, mingw, and mingw64. What will break
completely is any version of Visual Studio, including 2010 -- which I'm
fairly sure is not a "museum piece." It would be a shame to obviate all
of Peter's work getting libtool itself to work with MSVC, and then to
break that platform's libltdl.dll.
But I'll let Peter take point on this one.
