 Software Uses Statistical Quality Analysis

Continuing its IP tools innovation leadership, PatentCafe introduces Portfolio-Xpert™, a new enterprise-level software application targeted to intellectual property managers and corporate patent counsel responsible for patent strategy and large patent portfolio management.

Patents are being increasingly referred to as the "new corporate capital", so there's no shortage to the stream of books and Blogs popularizing the importance of strategically exploiting a company's patent estate. But, without effective portfolio data mining and patent analysis tools, all of the well-intentioned advice comes up short.

PatentCafe's new portfolio management software performs the heavy lifting in the strategic portfolio management process. And, the investment in Portfolio-Xpert can pay off quickly - by turning the typical months of manual portfolio analysis into just weeks, or by identifying new licensing opportunities other methods might miss.

The new software will also generate more quantitative patent data than manual processes ever could, even if given unlimited time looking at a company's patents.

Portfolio-Xpert™ leverages PatentCafe's advanced linguistics patent search engine, international patent data center, and proven patent quality-scoring system to evaluate dozens of key legal, commercial & technology factors that contribute to the core value of portfolio patents. It then lets managers sort their entire portfolio based on specific strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities related to the patents they are evaluating.

More importantly, the new tools deliver consistently objective and reliable patent information needed for effective strategic portfolio management and aggressive enforcement, including:

• NEW REVENUE: Map competitors' products against portfolios to identify potential infringement.
• COST SAVINGS: Identify low quality / non-core patents for licensing or divestiture.
• RISK MITIGATION: Analyze portfolio quality for acquisition, enforcement or investment.
• CORP. PLANNING: Cluster by core technologies to support R&D planning or future patent strategy.

PatentCafe's CEO, Andy Gibbs, says; "Over the years, portfolio experts have relied on our computer-modeled Patent Factor Index Reports because of '… how closely PatentCafe's analyses compares to expert human evaluation'. Portfolio-Xpert delivers this same computer modeling effectiveness to portfolios of 300 to 30,000 or more patents, giving IP managers the fastest access to more decision-support information than previously possible."

Portfolio-Xpert is the only solution available to IP managers who need to create, analyze and manage a large portfolio, and it scales easily to manage or analyze multiple portfolios - such as a competitor's patent estate, or a technology space being mined for patent acquisition targets.

Evaluating a portfolio is computationally intensive. The Patent Factor Index evaluation system evaluates every portfolio patent against the 100 most closely related patents before generating patent quality scores. For instance, the analysis of a 1,000 patent portfolio compares those 1,000 patents against the closest 100,000 patents. It then computes 3,000,000 data points used in scoring each of the portfolio patents. This analysis method emulates the kind of comparative evaluation that a skilled patent evaluator would use in a real world technology environment.

Portfolio-Xpert is a Web-based, enterprise-level application that scales from single user to global team collaboration. No installation is required, and the software easily expands from a single portfolio of up to 1,000 patents, to multiple portfolios with up to 40,000 patents.
