   half-heartedly (and in the end w/o further understanding):

   IIUC, ‘--conditional-dependencies’ is an optimization and so can be
   safely dropped.

Good news!  It turns out there was a bug in gnulib-tool after all:
<http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-gnulib/2012-07/msg00240.html>.

So, after a "git pull" of gnulib, we can leave that particular
invocation alone.  However, autogen.sh still fails a little further
down due to another Gnulib change.  Here's a patch for that:

FWIW, Gnulib's analogous script underwent similar treatment:

(I suppose one advantage autogen.sh has over bootstrap is that
autogen.sh does not silently fail.  Another, arguably, is that it
collects so-called "gnulib utility" info -- see HACKING.)
